Trees out‐forage understorey shrubs for nitrogen patches in a subarctic mountain birch forest

چکیده
Nitrogen (N), acquired by roots and mycorrhizal fungi supplied to plant foliage, is a growth-limiting nutrient at the subarctic treeline. Due this limitation, interspecific competition acquisition of N an important control on community composition distribution. The ability trees shrubs access shapes dynamics ecotone undergoing species range shifts changes in primary productivity driven climate change. Using 15N soil labelling we investigate fate inorganic N, spatial distances over which understorey treeline forest. was injected into rooting zones discrete 1 m2 patches foliar samples were collected from between 50 m away, 0.5 11 away labelled soil. label found mountain birch up 5 m, 2 We estimate that 1.27% pulse-derived foliage trees, compared 1.16% understorey. However, contributed only 31% ecosystem leaf area index (LAI), thus there disproportionate allocation added canopy with its contribution LAI. difference root exploration partitioning may confer competitive advantage respect nitrogen patches, alter structures within these forests. This particularly considering predicted climate-driven tree tall shrub expansion regions, likely consequences for carbon (C) cycling, as well biodiversity.

Susceptibility of Oregon Forest Trees and Shrubs to Phytophthora ramorum:
Phytophthora ramorum is a recently established invasive pathogen in some mixed-hardwood forests of central coastal California (10,11) and extreme southwestern Oregon (5). It also is known from horticultural nurseries and landscape plantings in Europe (12) and recently was reported from a few nurseries in California and Oregon (6,9). Symptoms are dramatically different on different host species....
متن کاملInvasive earthworm species and nitrogen cycling in remnant forest patches
Invasive non-native earthworms in forested areas of the northeastern United States are of concern since they have the potential to greatly change the nutrient dynamics of these ecosystems. Urban landscapes are particularly susceptible to non-native species invasions. In this study, we assessed earthworm communities and nitrogen transformations rates in urban and rural forest patches of the Grea...

متن کاملLegume Shrubs Are More Nitrogen-Homeostatic than Non-legume Shrubs
Legumes are characterized as keeping stable nutrient supply under nutrient-limited conditions. However, few studies examined the legumes' stoichiometric advantages over other plants across various taxa in natural ecosystems. We explored differences in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) stoichiometry of different tissue types (leaf, stem, and root) between N2-fixing legume shrubs and non-N2-fixing ...
متن کاملImpact of forest conversion to agriculture on carbon and nitrogen mineralization in subarctic Alaska
Land-use change is likely to be a major component of global change at high latitudes, potentially causing significant alterations in soil C and N cycling. We addressed the biogeochemical impacts of land-use change in fully replicated black spruce forests and agricultural fields of different ages (following deforestation) and under different management regimes in interior Alaska. Change from for...
